Second Officer
Duties & Responsibilities:
SECOND OFFICER – He is sometimes referred to as the Navigational Officer. He is mainly responsible for the navigational charts, navigational equipment / instruments, voyage planning, navigational watch, and medical matters, in accordance with Master’s instructions. He assists the Chief Officer in supervising the work of the deck crew and assists in cargo operations. His duties and responsibilities are as follows:
1.21 Navigational Charts and Publications

Ensures that all navigational charts / publications needed are complete, in good order and updated before the start of the voyage

Requisitions in advance thru the Master any chart or publication that is not available on board
1.22 Voyage Planning
- Lays the courses on the navigational charts by the shortest route, taking into account the potential dangers / risks, weather, traffic separation schemes, draft limitations and relevant regulations
- Makes available to other deck officers all necessary voyage information
1.23 At Sea
- Maintains navigational watch
- Measures and fixes the ship’s position, the distance from / to any reference point and the estimated time of arrival (ETA) at the port of destination
- Assists the Master in the preparation of the Abstracts
1.24 In Port
- Takes charge of a port watch
- Assists the Chief Officer in supervising cargo loading / unloading operations
- Carries out routine maintenance of navigational equipment
1.25 Medical matters and sanitation

Takes charge of all medical supplies and equipment

Ensures that medicine supplies are complete, and requisitions replenishments if the medicines are consumed or expired

Checks validity dates of all medicines and removes from the ship all expired medicines

Labels all medicines clearly indicating brand / generic names and directions for use and dosage

Ensures that toilets, and sanitary facilities are in order and cleaned properly

Administers first-aid treatment on board

Reports to the Master all cases of illness and injury

Maintains a Medical Log Book wherein he indicates the date / time, symptoms, treatment and medicines used for each medical case
1.26 Navigational instruments
- Takes charge of the operation and routine maintenance of all navigational equipment
- Tests the navigational and radio equipment before sailing and reports findings to the Master
1.27 Performs other functions as may be directed by the Master or the Chief

- Age Limit: 50 years old for 2nd Mate
