Second Engineer 

Duties & Responsibilities:

SECOND ENGINEER – He is the executive officer in the Engine Department.  He takes over the functions of the Chief Engineer in case the latter is ill or incapacitated.  The major duties and responsibilities of the Second Engineer are as follows:

1.4 Supervision of engine officer and ratings

1. Assists the Chief Engineer in supervising the work of the Third Engineer, Fourth Engineer, Electrician and crew members and gives them technical advice / guidance as needed
2. Ensures that the Chief Engineer’s orders are properly executed
3. Enforces discipline in the Engine Department
4. Ensures that his subordinates are familiar with engine systems, auxiliaries, compressors, pumps, purifiers, steering gear, etc.
5. Takes charge of shipboard training of engine cadets and orientation of crew members in the Engine Department

1.5 Control of spare parts and stores

1. Assists the Chief Engineer in maintaining inventory of spare parts and stores and in making requisitions for replacement
2. Inspects spare parts and stores delivered to the ship to ensure that they conform with specifications

1.6 Maintenance and Repair work

1. Assists the Chief Engineer in planning ship maintenance and running hours of machineries
2. Supervises maintenance and repairs particularly on the main engine, as directed by the Chief Engineer

1.7 Engineer Officer of a Watch

1. Takes charge of the safe and economical operation of the propulsion machinery and auxiliaries
2. Monitors consumption of fuel and lubricants and reports to the Chief Engineer any abnormal consumption so that the same can be investigated and remedied
3. Assists in monitoring all deliveries of fuel and lubricants to avoid overflow and to ensure that the proper quantities are delivered
4. Prepares the following reports / records: a) Log and Bell Books b) Auxiliary Daily Log c) Reports about accidents, incidents or abnormal conditions during watch
5. Observes prescribed operational guidance for engine watch keeping while under way or in port

1,8 Performs other tasks that may be assigned by the Chief Engineer

• Age Limit:  60 years old for 2^nd Engineer
